welcome to the graduation Pathways overview presentation my name is Greg McDaniel and I'm an assistant principal here zchs and I'm Kathy Petain and I am the College and Career transition coordinator and counseling department chair of this presentation strides with a detailed overview Indiana's new graduation requirements the State Board of Education change the requirements to earn a high school diploma in December of 2017 the goal of this change to make sure every student and Indiana graduated high school prepared to either continue their education or to enter the workforce collectively these requirements are called graduation pathways the shift to graduation pathways name of the class of 2018 as some schools piloted the new requirements for students in the class of 2019 20 20 20 21 and 20 22 schools were given the option to implement graduation Pathways continue with the current graduation requirements or use a combination of both zchs chose to offer both options but starting with the class of 2023 the state requires all students to make the graduation Pathways to earn their diploma previously students were required to earn a number of high school credits and to pass the 10th grade ISTEP exam in order to earn a diploma the graduation Pathways still requires a minimum number of high school credits students are no longer required to pass instead students must demonstrate job-related skills and has to continue their education After High School this slide provides an overview of these three requirements students must take courses that are in them a diploma students must demonstrate employability skills in one of three ways and students must demonstrate postsecondary Readiness company in season 1 of 7 Ways it is these multiple options that give graduation Pathways its name different students meme graduation requirements by pursuing different pathways the first requirement students must meet to graduate is to earn a high school diploma the types of diploma students may earn has not changed core 40 diploma and academic honors diploma the second requirement students must meet to graduate is to demonstrate employability skills the state allows schools to offer three options to demonstrate these skills project-based learning service-based learning or work-based learning zchs recognizes the value in all three of these approaches we utilize project-based learning in several of our courses are students frequently engage in community service opportunities and we offer coursework centered on work-based learning but to help students meet the graduation Pathways requirements lcchs students will complete a project-based learning experience as a part of their regular coursework the third requirement students must meet to graduate is to demonstrate post Readiness competencies there are currently 7 options available to demonstrate these skills students may earn an academic or Technical Honors diploma students may meet specific benchmarks on the act or sat students may take three credit courses students my meet score benchmarks on ASVAB the armed services vocational aptitude battery students mayor and specific state or industry workplace credentials for students may take a series of Civic Career and Technical courses we will detail each of these options later in this presentation here's an example of how a student may meet the graduation Pathways this student met the coursework requirements by turning a academic honors diploma they completed the employability skills requirement by completing a project in biology and documenting their experiences and they met the post-secondary requirements by scoring high enough on the SAT here's another example the student earned a general diploma they completed a project in US history they took business courses in order to become a Career and Technical concentrator let's look at these requirement graduation Pathways and little bit more detail if you downloaded the graduation Pathways planning document can follow along and begin considering which pathway your child may follow the first graduation pathways earn a diploma sometimes people say earned a diploma to mean a student graduated from high school this is not an accurate for several years and it is not accurate under Pathways learning a diploma is one component of meeting graduation requirements tone it still must be met parents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with a diploma requirements zchs counselors can help answer any questions you may have the second graduation pathway requirement is to demonstrate in it is our goal at cchs to maximize each students opportunity to meet graduation requirements while providing meaningful learning experiences to meet this goal zchs will incorporate project-based learning Institute courses biology and US history or u.s. History AP because all students must take these courses in order to earn a diploma all students will have the opportunity to meet the employability skills required the third graduation pathway requirements to demonstrate postsecondary Readiness students may meet this requirement in one of seven ways one of these ways to earn an academic honors diploma or Technical Honors diploma approximately 65% of zchs students typically earn one of these do diplomas and so most of our students could meet graduation requirements using this pathway students May demonstrate postsecondary Readiness by meeting benchmarks on the act or sat benchmarks are 18 in English or 22 and reading and 22 in math or 23 and science students must meet benchmarks in English and reading and math or science currently the SAT Benchmark is 480 in reading and writing and five students must meet benchmarks in both reading and math the slideshows act and sat averages for zchs the average SAT and SAT scores earned by zchs students exceed the required graduation Pathways benchmarks well over half of zchs students can meet graduation requirements using this pathway students May demonstrate postsecondary Readiness by successfully completing 3 AP or dual Great Courses AP and dual credit courses may be used interchangeably that is a student may take two AP courses and one dual credit course or one AP course and two dual credit courses it is important note that this requirement is based on courses not credits earned some courses run one semester and earn one credit some courses run two semesters and earn two credits but for graduation Pathways both a one-credit course and the two credit course have equal weight of one course this slide shows current zchs AP and dual credit courses offered to students like all of our courses student enrollment determines whether we teach these courses any given year students May demonstrate postsecondary Readiness by earning a qualifying score on ASVAB the armed services vocational aptitude battery zchs will offer the ASVAB twice a year starting in the 21 92 school year students May demonstrate postsecondary Readiness by earning a state or industry certification students must attend the J Everett light career center to earn the certification these courses can lead to Industry certification students May demonstrate postsecondary Readiness by becoming a Career and Technical concentrator to become a Career and Technical concentrator students must earn a c average two courses identified by the Indiana Department of Education as Career and Technical Advanced courses this table shows the courses offered at both dchs and J Everett light career center that may lead a student to become a career and Tech concentrator please note that some of the courses require specific prerequisite courses at j e l typically become available to students during their junior year thank you for reviewing graduation path if you have specific questions please contact Greg McDaniel assistant principal or Kathy Petain College and Career transition coordinator
